Taking Corporate Communications and Collaboration to the Next Level Using Microsoft Lync 2013

Recently BMC Software IT took a hard look at the way we were organized. The goal was to optimize and align our people to address several industry trends around cloud computing and unified communications. When you look at the way people communicate with each other and consume media and content today versus even 10 years ago, things have changed a lot. Our workforce is changing in many ways, we have a new user base, the Millennials, which rarely even use desk phones and have grown up on the web.
From an organizational perspective, in the past you would have traditional telecom teams that occasionally worked with the network team on VOIP issues. Another team would handle Audio/Video technologies including Video Technology Conference (VTC) units or large scale meetings, and then an additional team was tasked with managing email, IM, and content management systems.
All of these traditional organizational boundaries became very blurry. This became very clear to us when upgrading and integrating Microsoft Lync 2013 into our communications fabric. All of these teams had to work together to successfully implement a unified communications platform that included the integration of IM, Voice, Video, Content Sharing, Video Conferencing Units, Enterprise Networking and Wi-Fi, Email, Streaming Media and Content Management. So, we took the walls down and now all of the people associated with these technologies report into the Unified Communications group.
Our strategy is to implement technologies that provide maximum productivity and mobility to our employee base as well as ensure that we collaborate with our customers and partners around the world. We are transforming the communications fabric across the globe by disconnecting our old school T1 and ISDN infrastructure into a Global SIP fabric traversing our MPLS network, ripping out our traditional PBX and VOIP phones and going to Lync 2013 and soft phones, upgrading our enterprise networking and WiFi to the latest 802.11n access points, moving away from h.323 VTC units to VTC units that use traditional protocols but also Lync 2013.
Just to put this in perspective, between our legacy solutions for PBX maintenance, conference call and screen sharing services, BMC Software was spending approximately $6 million annually. By implementing Lync 2013 we are on the path to reduce our overall costs across all service areas by roughly $4.5 Mn annually, while providing a rich unified communications platform that enables mobility for our employee base.
Gone are the days that the only way to interact with your customers and partners was by phone or email. IM federation across Lync or Skype is the way BMC communicates today. Gone are the days of staring down a conference phone and audio only communications. Collaboration of rich audio, video, and content sharing is the way we collaborate today.
Bottom line is, we are transforming the way BMC Software communicates and collaborates. Out with the old and in with the new, while saving millions in communications costs annually.
